thoughts and views on today's world

Welcome to my Twenty-Twenty blog.  During the past six months of shelter in place, I've been writing about art, life, and the state of our world. Some of my essays about art and artists have been published in exhibition catalogs and on art world web pages, and are available to read on my website. But I also have had to accept the reality that all the art publications I have regularly written for over the past 5 years are gone.  I realized that a venue for new publishing would need to be one that gives me the freedom to write about what matters to me--and others--without restrictions during this phenomenally complex period.

It is both suitable and somewhat ironic that I am finally posting this first entry on September 11.  Over the past nine years this date, for our country, has been marked by memories of the violence and destruction of being bombed.  And yet, here we are, on September 11, 2020, in the midst of a world that is defined by a pandemic, a challenged economy, and phenomenal social unrest characterized by issues concerning race, class, and an unnerving lack of leadership. Yet, I remain hopeful as we move closer to voting on November 3 and the potential to end at least one part of this misery.

I named this blog Twenty-Twenty to acknowledge this unfathomable year. If 2020 was a movie made earlier in history, we would discount the plot as impossible. Yet 20/20 also refers to sharpness of vision, as well as clarity of hindsight.
I will be posting thought pieces, short essays, and lots of pictures that share stories and perspective about this year, looking beyond with hopefulness.
